Notes from the house.

We write when there is something to say: a change in the menu, a path worth taking, a room that earns its reputation in a certain month.

Early sun across a green ridge

Essay · 12 October

The long light

From September until the first hard frost, the East Room does something the other rooms cannot. The sun comes in sideways and stays.

Cellar

What we pour in October

The cider this month comes from an orchard two miles inland. It is drier than last year’s, with a smoky edge from the barrels they borrowed and never quite gave back. We pour it cold, in a small glass, before dinner.

Beside it: a vermouth made down the coast, and one red by the glass that changes when the case runs out. The pear menu stays up while the fruit does. If you are deciding between weekends, choose the earlier one.

Walk

The headland path

Leave by the kitchen garden, not the drive. The path drops behind the boathouse and follows the granite until a wooden stair. That stair is the turn people skip, and it is the whole point: a pocket beach, cold water, and a flat rock that fits two.

Forty minutes without stopping. Wear shoes that can get wet. In a northeast wind, stay on the upper path and come back for coffee. We keep a tide chart by the parlor door.
